Goodyear and Cooper are the only major American-owned tire brands that still make most of their tires in the USA. Several foreign-owned companies, including Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli, Hankook, Toyo and Kumho, also build tires in U.S. factories. But no brand makes every size here, so the only reliable way to know is to check the DOT code on the sidewall of the exact tire you are buying.

The U.S. tire map is changing quickly. Several plants announced closures in 2025 and 2026, so older “made in USA” lists are often out of date. This guide reflects what tire makers have announced as of late 2026.

Tire brands with U.S. factories

Brand (owner)Owner’s home countryU.S. consumer tire production
GoodyearUSAYes. Plants include Lawton (OK) and Topeka (KS). Goodyear has agreed to close its Fayetteville (NC) plant by the end of 2027.
Cooper (owned by Goodyear since 2021)USAYes. Findlay (OH), Tupelo (MS) and Texarkana (AR).
Michelin, BFGoodrich, UniroyalFranceYes. Several plants in South Carolina and other states. Michelin plans to end BFGoodrich production in Tuscaloosa (AL) by the end of 2028.
Bridgestone, FirestoneJapanYes. Passenger and light truck plants in the Southeast, including Wilson (NC) and Aiken County (SC).
Continental, General TireGermanyYes. Sumter (SC), Mount Vernon (IL) and Clinton (MS).
PirelliItalyYes, select performance lines from Rome (GA).
HankookSouth KoreaYes. Clarksville (TN).
ToyoJapanYes. White (GA).
KumhoSouth KoreaYes. Macon (GA).
NokianFinlandYes. Dayton (TN).
YokohamaJapanReduced. Its Salem (VA) plant closed in March 2026 and a Spartanburg (SC) plant closed in 2025. Its West Point (MS) plant focuses mainly on commercial tires.

Brands owned by these companies often share the same factories. Cooper’s Mastercraft and Starfire lines, for example, come from Cooper plants, and Firestone shares plants with Bridgestone.

Which tire brands are actually American?

“American brand” and “made in the USA” are not the same thing. Goodyear, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, describes itself as the only remaining U.S.-based tire manufacturer, and it has owned Cooper since 2021. Both still import some sizes from plants in Mexico, Canada, Asia and elsewhere.

Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental are foreign-owned, but each employs thousands of American workers and builds millions of tires a year in U.S. plants. If your goal is to support U.S. manufacturing jobs, a U.S.-built Michelin or Bridgestone counts just as much as a U.S.-built Goodyear.

How to check if a tire was made in the USA

  • Read the sidewall. Most tires state the country of manufacture in small print, for example “Made in USA”.
  • Find the DOT code. Every tire sold in the U.S. has a code starting with “DOT”. The two characters right after it are the plant code, which identifies the exact factory.
  • Look up the plant code. NHTSA publishes the plant codes assigned to each tire factory. Search the two-character code to see the city and country.
  • Ask the seller before ordering online. Retailers can often tell you which plant a specific size is shipping from. Stock can switch between plants, so ask for the current batch.

The last four digits of the DOT code show when the tire was made, as week and year. “2326” means the 23rd week of 2026. It is worth checking this too, because tires age even in storage.

Why the “made in USA” list keeps changing

Tire makers are consolidating production as imports grow and demand shifts. Recent announcements include Goodyear’s Fayetteville closure (about 1,750 jobs, by the end of 2027), Michelin ending BFGoodrich production in Tuscaloosa by 2028, Yokohama closing its Salem plant, and Bridgestone closing its LaVergne (TN) truck tire plant in 2025. When a plant closes, its sizes usually move to another factory, sometimes outside the U.S. That is why a tire model that was U.S.-made a few years ago may not be today.

Frequently asked questions

Are Goodyear tires made in the USA?

Many are. Goodyear builds passenger and light truck tires at U.S. plants such as Lawton, Oklahoma and Topeka, Kansas, but some sizes come from Mexico, Canada and other countries. Check the DOT code on the specific tire.

Are Michelin tires made in the USA?

Many Michelin tires sold in the U.S. are built in American plants, mainly in South Carolina. Michelin is a French company, and some sizes are imported.

Are Cooper tires still American?

Yes. Cooper is owned by Goodyear, an American company, and still makes tires in Ohio, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Are tires made in the USA better?

Not automatically. Quality depends on the tire model and the manufacturer’s standards, which major brands apply across their plants. Choose the right tire for your vehicle first, then check where it is made if that matters to you.

What do the numbers after DOT mean?

The first two characters are the plant code, the middle characters describe the tire size and type, and the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture.

Plant information is based on company announcements available as of late 2026. Production can move between plants at any time, so always check the DOT code on the tire you buy.
